LEGAZPI CITY — Mayor Noel Rosal has warned all operators of All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) rentals and quarry business in Legazpi City of a closure order after receiving reports that some of them continue their activities inside the Mount Mayon danger zone despite the repeated warnings issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and local authorities.

Rosal, in an interview Monday, said he received information that some ATV rental operators were seen with some tourists inside the danger zone.

He added that a backhoe owned by a quarry operator was also seen within the Bonga-Buyuan and Mabinit Channels of the volcano.

“I would cancel the business permit of these operators if they will caught in the act of operating inside the danger zones,” Rosal said.

He said he has ordered the Legazpi City Police through its chief, Supt. Nilo Berdin, to investigate who the reported violators of the danger zone policy are and to establish more chokepoints in the area.

When asked what he would do regarding the ATV operators who have business permits from the nearby town of Daraga but are plying the trail routes inside Legazpi, the mayor said, when they venture into his city, “they will be arrested and punished”.

Rosal warned the erring operators of ATV and quarry businesses of a possible hazardous eruption of Mayon especially inside the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone and the 7-km and 8-km extended and buffer zone, respectively. (Jorge Hallare/PNA)
