DARAGA, ALBAY — “Ang hirap dito sa kalagayan namin, kain-tulog lang, parang nag hihintay sa wala” ( The difficult for us here, we eat and sleep only as if waiting for nothing) said by Alberto Sevilla, 66, farmer from barangay Miisi, Daraga town.

“We are under house rest”, jokingly chuckled by Arsenio Inocencio, 81, and was with Sevilla and a handful of farmers joining Miisi village councilor Ely Malate,55, in watching young boys warming up for basketball at the court of Gabawan Elementary School. This is typical scenario every time Mayon Volcano shows off her abnormalities.

Noted as source of sambalas, a bushy small pepper plant used for chilies, Barangay Miisi, this town, is included within the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone prescribed by Phivolcs. Hence, all residents were permanently resettled in Barangay Salvacion, during the time of Albay Gov. Jose “Peping” Estevez, and named their site after the former head of the province, Estevez Village. However, farmers must go back and forth to their farms for their daily needs.

According to Malate, they are used to this kind of situation, every time Mayon Volcano in tantrums, they move for safety leaving behind farm animals like carabaos, cows, pigs, dogs and chickens, and whatever happens, as volcano’s condition worsens, the people accept it: “okey lang!” [BicolToday.com]
