Agri damage ₱35 million due to Mayon eruption; displacing more 3,000 farmers

LEGAZPI CITY, 25Jan2018 — Department of Agriculture (DA) in Albay has estimated around P35 million worth of damage to rice, corn, crops, and vegetables, while about 900 hectares of agricultural land affected by ashfall and more than 3,000 farmers affected during the eruptive period of Mayon Volcano since Jan. 13, 2018.

This was bared today by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Office (PDRRMO) as it is beginning to consolidate data that would determine the “response phase” as soon as the conical-shape volcano subsides from its eruptive period, said PDRRMO action officer Cedric Daep.

DA report showed that from the towns of Daraga, Sto. Domingo, Camalig, and Guinobatan about 2,933 hectares planted with rice, corn, and vegetables estimated 11,735 volume of production worth P3.345 million affected by ashfall.

Out of 45 hectares under coconut plantation with crops and vegetables about 36 damaged for Daraga, Guinobatan and Polangui towns having estimated value of P7.765million worth of volume production. In cities of Legazpi, Tabaco, Ligao, and towns of Oas and Polangui about 805 hectares damaged out of 958 while 3,092 farmers affected with about 39,000 volume of production estimated worth about P20million, DA partial report mentions.
