Army linked on councilman slaying, says Sorsogon NPA

Salvador ‘Buddy” Atienza.

SORSOGON CITY — The NPA command here, Celso Minguez Command (CMC), pointed at the 31st IBPA as “responsible” for the killing of village councilman Salvador Atienza of Barangay Trece Martirez on Tuesday, September 12.

Atienza, cruising on his tricycle, was gunned down by gunmen riding on two motorcycles who drove by alongside him and pumped into him 4 bullets, the shooting was witnessed by his 2 daughters, one who is still a minor, who were his passengers on board the trimobile.

NPA-CMC spokesperson, Samuel Guerrero, in a statement said Atienza was long suspected by the military as a member of the underground people mass movement.

Guerrero said as early as August 20 meeting at the town proper, 31st IBPA officers had warned village officials that the “worst” shall come to them if they do not cooperate with the military anti-insurgency drive.

The military officers had implied that they wasted the life of Barangay chief Oscar Jetomo of Marinas village, Sorsogon City, an incident that happened on August 16.  []
