MANILA — Environment literacy, awareness and strategic legal remedies are much to be desired behind environmental cases experienced in the country today.

These came out during the forum Tapatan sa Aristocrat here, where lawyer Maximo I. Banares, Jr., Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) legal chief, disclosed that two “big cases” regarding oil spill are still pending in special courts.

Guimaras Island oil spill filed in 2009 against cargo vessel has about 367 fisher folks asking compensation damage of more than P100million, Banares explained, facing media practitioners with Melo Acuna hosting the forum. []
