Media group SONAR reactivates; new officers elected

SORSOGON CITY – After 23 years of inactivity, the Sorsogon Organization of Newswriters, Announcers and Reporters (SONAR) has risen like a phoenix to once again assume its role in the local media community.

The founding members of the organization gathered recently and formally reactivated the group with the end in view of strengthening the media sector.

“We are reviving the SONAR so that we can assist our co-workers in enhancing their skills and elevating the welfare of the working press,” the group said during its reorganizational meeting held in Bacon District, Sorsogon City, August 12.

Primarily, the organization aims to address the absence of skills enhancement training for local media especially on reportage, news writing and media ethics, lawyer Joven Laura, the groups’ founding board chairman, said.

They also plan to conduct series of forums in schools to discuss the dangers and ill-effects of social media, cyber crime law and other topics related to media which tend to endanger the community especially the youth.
