MANILA — “Kung sasakay sa train papunta ng Bicol, ang dapat dalhin ay kalendaryo, hindi relo!”.– a quite painful joke that belittles the reputation of Bicol Express Train which long been clamored to be back on its track.

“This time, this is not rehabilitation but reconstruction”, said with strong determination by Undersecretary Cesar Chavez of the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

Chavez, is Bicolano DOTr top planner with masters’ degree in national security, has assured this time that Bicol Express Train will regain it’s prestige by five-hour travel from Manila to Matnog in Sorsogon.

He explained to reporters covering Wednesday Roundtable forum that the advent of Integrated Terminal it would be more accessible to make it at Los Banos as depot for a long haul and by limitting train stops only in Lucena, Gumaca, Naga City, Legazpi City and Matnog, Sorsogon. “Only five hours estimated travel time”. Chavez said.

The construction of single track locomotive, according to Chavez, would prepare for a dual purpose, diesel & electric and from narrow gauge to standard gauge in preparation for the future expansion to Central Luzon.

An amount of P54B, taken from appropriated P150B, shall be utilized for land acquisition, Chavez said.

This project is result of previous studies and updated by Asian Development Bank where about 11,000 passengers commute daily from Manila to Bicol while about 350,000 passengers everyday coming from Manila to Los Banos. [BicolToday.com]
