Talks must continue despite ‘bumpy, winding road’ to peace process

MANILA, 4July2017 (BicolToday.com) — Negotiators from all camps affirmed today that talks must go on behindd complexities in dealing peace process likened to “bumpy, winding road “.

“Bumpy ” said former Sec. Hernani Braganza, his description how peace negotiations faced by the government being done for CPP/NPA/NDF; agreement with the MILF/MNLF; Cordillera Peace Process and Marawi Crisis which were tackled during the 4th Aniversary presentation of Tapatan sa Aristocrat forum hosted by veteran broadcaster Melo Acuna in Manila.

Assistant Secretary for Peace & Development, Col Dickson P Hermoso, presented the progress of peace talks and read talking points via Sec Jesus G Dureza’s “peace roadmap” before the media and guests including Rey Casambre, Executive Director, Philippine Peace Center.

There’s no peace because ordinary Filipinos are still in poverty, while the government parades the increase in economic growth rate, but “kakaunti ang nakikinabang”, said Casambre.

On the other hand, former undersecretary of National Defense, MGen Antonio Santos Jr., has proposed “spatial institution” in Luzon, Visayas & Mindanao in handling peace talks but insisted there’s should be sincerity & patience.

Political Analyst Prof Richard J Heydarian, has urged peace negotiators to take advantage of President Duterte’s “unique” character in dealing problems which is not present during the time of previous presidents. “We must, however, learn how to handle “spoilers” of peace talks”, Heydarian said.

Spoilers as stumbling block for peace could be identified as “foreign & locals” who have “business” in want of conflict or personal reasons. [BicolToday.com]
