Albay fisherfolks demand better aid

LEGAZPI CITY, 19May2017 (Bicoltoday.com) – Fisher folks in Albay demand better aid and addressed perennial problems of small fisher folks in the province that considered among the poor sectors.

During the provincial consultation, May 18, at Legazpi City hall in Albay, almost hundred of fisher folks support progressive organizations which strongly condemn acts and law duly implemented by the government that surpass their rights for free fishing.

United with KMP Albay and Lambat bicol, fishers folks strongly reiterated that fishing is the only livelihood that they hope for. Restrictions and other prohibitions limits them for their everyday needs. One prohibition is the need for registration of every fisherman, same as their net, if not, they won’t be allowed to go fishing. And also the need to report before and after your fishing including the quantity of your caught and the area where you caught it.

These were seconded by Pamalakaya National President Fernando Hicap, also former representative of Anakpawis partylist, saying that these small fishermen have been already forgotten while big fisheries have been given all the freedom and privileges they want.

Hicap addressed the national situation of fisher folks in the country. “For now, the small fisher folks are considered as one of the most poor sector,” he said.

According to BFAR, 38% of the fishermen have motor boats, most are low class. While 62% of them used boat with paddle and sails. Reclamation, water conversion, eco-tourism and other neoliberal policies are the reasons why small fishermen are still in the merge of poverty, Hicap dded.

“Fisheries must remain communal and rules and orientations must be changed like being export oriented and import dependent. It should be Filipino first so that needs will be addressed and responded. Rehabilitation must be given and destructive activities on seas must be stop,” said Hicap.

Salvacion Farmer and Fisherfolks Organization (SFFO) chairman Nanding Valenzuela was the new elected chairman of fisherfolks in Albay.

According to Nanding, it is just that the fisher folks actively join and participate progressive activities that will surely arouse their knowledge on the issues they are facing and will duly help them think and make ways to resolve it.
