MASBATE CITY, 02May2017 ( – In celebration of Labor Day, progressive groups on Monday call for an end to contractual employments, mining in Aroroy town and for the justice on the death of victims of the crossfire between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and News People’s Army (NPA) recently in Cawayan town.

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) Masbate together with Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Masbate, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Masbate (KMM), Pamalakaya, Masbate Teachers’ Forum, Ugnayan ng Mamamayang Laban sa Dayuhang Pagmimina at Kumbersyon Argraryo, Samahan ng mga Kababaihang Magsasaka ng Masbate (SAKAMAMA), Kabataan Masbate and Karapatan Masbate marched holding different banners to voice out their concerns.

The groups protested against contractual labor where the short term contracts are offered to workers with less or no benefits at all. They also called for an end to open pit mining in Aroroy town in Masbate which causes the destruction of environment that affects local farmers.

Another issue they wanted to be acted upon is the militarization in municipalities of the province which disturbs the civilians and put their lives in danger when shootouts arise.

Recently, an encounter between AFP and NPA in Brgy. Panan-awan in Cawayan town ended the life of three residents, two of which are elementary students.

Reden, 9, and Crislyn, 11, and their 70-year old grandmother Lolita Pepito where caught in a crossfire which happened last April 20 in Sitio Lubigan. Lolita’s 70-year old husband, Paulino, was the only one who survived the shootout with a gunshot wound on his left arm and several scratches on his body.

Due to fear, 424 residents evacuated to the barangay hall and health center while some of them resided with their relatives far from the shootout area. The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRO) of Cawayan provided relief goods for the evacuees who recently just started going back to their homes to get settled in again.
