Abandoned car in Matnog port, Sorsogon, yields 10 kilos shabu, not bomb

MATNOG, Sorsogon Province, 12April2017 (BicolToday.com) – Police and Coast Guard men manning port security here rushed toward an abandoned car, suspecting it of having a hidden bomb, but instead discovered 10 kilos of illegal drug, shabu, inside the car, its registry bound for Samar from Navotas, Metro-Manila.

The sudden report of a suspected car bomb had stirred fear among people inside the port when combined teams of police and Coast Guard used K-9 dogs to conduct the search.

Acting on tip from concerned citizens inside the port, port authorities had used K-9 dogs to sniff around the suspected car which was abandoned.

Suspecting a bomb was inside the Toyota Revo, authorities planted a light explosive to force the car door to open, hoping such charge would trigger the bomb to explode safely.

After opening the car door, security personnel found 10 kilos of shabu.

Matnog police chief PCInsp. Jeric Don Sadia said the port manifest showed the car is owned by Ramil Mercado of Navotas, Metro-Manila bound for Samar. A license ID was also found by police.

As of press time, police are on the watch for Mercado.
