NAGA CITY, 28March2017 (BicolToday.com) – To mark the 46th anniversary of Katipunan ng mga Gurong Makabayan (KAGUMA) today, patriotic and progressive teachers in Bicol responded to the demand of intensifying and propagating the need for a national democratic revolution with a socialist perspective against imperialism, bureaucrat capitalism and feudalism.
Since KAGUMA was formed in 1971 as one of the allied organizations of National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), it was able to unite with all patriotic and democratic classes and sectors in the common struggle for national liberation and social emancipation.
However the dismayed situation of public teachers in the present administration continues.
KAGUMA-Bicol condemns the Duterte administration and some Department of Education (DepEd) administrators for their anti-teachers policies.
Feliza Sarmiento of KAGUMA-Bicol said that Duterte administration continuously attacking the people including the teachers by implementing laws and programs against them and only serving the interests of the capitalists.
“The government remains a reactionary state that keeps on selling the natural resources of the country to imperialist countries, US and China,” Sarmiento said. “The government continues to neglect our economic welfare, violate our democratic rights, and curtail academic freedom.”
“Instead of providing full support to the licensed teachers in the country, the regime allotted bigger budget to its AFP and PNP as well as providing bigger allowance to their cadets,” Sarmiento added.
KAGUMA-Bicol also belied on the salary of teachers in entry level.
“The 27, 000 pesos for the entry level of teachers is a big lie. It was maliciously made by Secretary Diokno. The salary, bonus and other benefits were combined to make it appear that teachers will receive bigger,” Sarmiento said.
According to Sarmiento, teachers even performing other loads from different government agencies because of filed clerical duties and requirements of the government.
“Kto12 is also an additional burden not only to the parents but also to the teachers,” Sarmiento added. “The reactionary government insists in implementing Kto12 to promote neoliberal policies of imperialist US.”
Teachers in the public educational system are deprived from their rights and privileges as stated in the Magna Carta for Public School Teachers according to Sarmiento.
KAGUMA-Bicol is committed to a revolutionary education by embarking on literacy and numeracy campaigns in rural areas in the region influenced by New People’s Army (NPA).
Teachers and other education workers can only break the chains of oppression and exploitation and fully realize their rights and potentials with the overthrow of the neocolonial state and the complete overhaul of the current semi-feudal system according to the statement.
NPA’s 48th anniversary
KAGUMA-Bicol supports the 48th anniversary of NPA. The revolutionary group commends the NDFP-member organizations in Metro Manila that joined the “lightning rally” yesterday in Quezon City in observance of the NPA’s anniversary.
Hundreds of revolutionaries called on the people to join the NPA and be part of its revolution against US imperialism, bureaucrat capitalism and feudalism.
NDFP and KAGUMA have made great strides in the propagation of a progressive, nationalist, scientific and mass-oriented culture in the course of waging the national democratic revolution.
Members of KAGUMA and other progressive teachers have been going beyond what is being taught in current textbooks and curricula to propagate patriotism, awareness of rights, critical and scientific thinking among the youth and students.
KAGUMA continues to encourage its members to participate directly in the armed revolution.
“Under the NDFP, the unity of all allied organizations for the national democratic revolution is growing stronger,” KAGUMA-Bicol stated. [BicolToday.com]
