SORSOGON CITY, 24Aug2015 (BicolToday.com) – The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines- Sorsogon Chapter (NUJP-Sorsogon expressed alarm and outraged over the killing of the spokesperson of human rights group, Karapatan.

Teodoro Escanilla, a 63-year old human rights advocate, was gunned down by unidentified assailants on the evening of August 19 inside his residence.

He was the anchorman of Karapatan’s radio program “Pamana ng Lahi” that is being aired over PBN-DZMS every Sunday.

As an anchorman, Ka Tudoy was firmly critical of the abuses committed by the agents of the state especially the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

According to NUJP, his brutal killing was an act of cowardice as the assailants and the mastermind took advantage of his age and used superior force, yet sought the anonymity provided by darkness.

“This attack on the hapless victim was meant to silence the truth and hide the evil doings of some elements in the society. It was an act of terror aimed at suppressing dissent and to sow fear among the peace-loving people of Sorsogon.”

Ironically, this extra-judicial killing occurred while the European Commission was conducting a review of unsolved extra-judicial killing cases in the Bicol Region.

This murder is also a sabotage to the efforts being done by the political leaders of Sorsogon to further improve the over-all situation of the province in terms of peace and order to usher in improved economic climate.

“We, therefore, call on the authorities to get to the bottom of this latest incident which threatens to once again plunge the province into chaos and bring back the dark years of retaliatory killings which have caused the death of several human rights advocates and state agents.” NUJP-Sorsogon said.

“We demand swift justice for Ka Tudoy as we say “NO!” to the suppression of the freedom of expression!”, the group declared. [BicolToday.com]
