LEGAZPI CITY, 14Mar2015 — At least 8,000 athletes, coaches, local government and education officials and guests are expected to attend the opening of the Palarong Bicol 2015 at Freedom Sports Complex, Pili, Camarines Sur, on Sunday, according to a conservative estimate of the Department of Education.

Undersecretary Mario A. Deriquito, DepEd undersecretary for partnership and external linkages, will be the guest of honor and speaker during the occasion.

The governors, city mayors and congressmen of the participating local government units are also expected to come.

Jose Bonto, DepEd-Bicol administrative officer, said 13 schools divisions from the seven cities and six provinces of the Bicol Region will compete in this year’s sports festival.

Albay is the current defending champion and the host province is Camarines Sur.

Other participating provinces are Camarines Norte, Sorsogon and the island provinces of Masbate and Catanduanes.

The competing cities are Naga, Iriga, Legazpi, Ligao, Tabaco, Sorsogon and Masbate.

Bonto said the sports competition involves 21 games like archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, chess, football, gymnastics, sepak takraw, soft ball, swimming, table tennis, taekwando, tennis, volley, billiard, wu-shu and wrestling.

He noted the improving performance or standing of the Bicol delegation in Palarong Pambansa 2014 held in Laguna.

From the previous regular place of 13th, 14th and 15th in overall standing, the performance ranking of the province was up to No. 9-10.

Bonto claimed that this manifests the growing strength of Bicol in the field of sports.

He said the DepEd-Bicol is supporting the bid of Albay to host the Palarong Bansa 2016 and that the regional office will campaign hard during the Palarong Pambansa 2015 to be held in Tagum City in Davao on May 3-11. (PNA)
