Hostage-taker blows up gas tank, causing hotel fire in Daraga, Albay; 7 teeners die

DARAGA, Albay, 20Dec 2014 (BicolToday.com)  – – At least seven persons died before dawn today while inside the lodging house at Barangay Kimantong, here, when razed by fire resulted from gas tank explosion  when unidentified male suspect took hostage two minor females, according to police report.

Daraga Police Chief, Supt. Joel P. Adan, mentioned a sketchy report that unidentified male suspect took hostage two teenagers identified as Kathleen Bronola Briones and Josies Alejecera Alcovendas, both college students from San Fernando, Masbate, were all inside Bicolandia Lodging House at around 2:24 AM today.

Adan said while the suspect was inside, other guests including a certain, John de la Pena, 17, who works as boy of the adjacent canteen were told not to go out of the building by the hostage taker who allegedly removed the hose-pipe of the gas tank and forcibly closed the door of the canteen. At this juncture, a loud explosion was heard followed by fire that gutted the entire building.

Police and fire fighters headed by Fire Insp. Delfin Magdaong went to the area and found out the entire building was on fire . They could not ascertain as to how many occupants were trapped inside. About seven persons were brought out of the raging building including the suspect and were brought to the government hospital.

The victims of hostage taking were reported dead on arrival at the hospital including the suspect who remained unidentified. Three others who reportedly died of suffocation were not identified by the police.

Talks are filtering that the alleged hostage taker could be the boy friend of one of the victims said to be college students. It was learned further that said lodging house is owned by a certain Connie Codino of Barangay Ilawod, Daraga town. [BicolToday.com]
